First Grade Information
For more specific information regarding your child's classroom routines and procedures, please consult your classroom teacher.
Attendance:
Your child's attendance is crucial to their achievement in First Grade. Your child is assessed on a regular basis every trimester. When a child is absent, s/he misses the learning experiences and interactions with peers that cannot be replicated in homework or make-up work. Trips and early release during school hours are highly discouraged. We do understand that some absences (such as illness) cannot be prevented. If you child is absent, please call the school's attendance line and send a note upon his/her return to school. Please also not that school begins at 7:55 a.m. If you child is late s/he must get a tardy slip from the school office before reporting to the classroom.
Homework:
The purpose of homework is to teach students to be responsible learners, to develop regular routine, and to practice concepts and skills learned in the classroom. We recommend a special time and place be set aside for homework everyday. We encourage the students to do as much of the homework on their own, but we ask for your help with the directions, reading difficult work, and checking over and initialing their work. Pleas also sign your child's Homework Log daily to indicate your participation in your child's homework.
Arrival:
If you child arrives before 7:45 a.m., s/he will need to wait quietly outside of their classroom. Please note that there is no staff supervision at this time. If you child does arrive early, s/he is expected to sit quietly outside of his/her classroom. Please try and allow your child to sit and wait with his/her classmates independently.
Dismissal:
School ends at 2:15, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. School ends at 1:30 on Wednesdays.
Birthdays:
Birthdays are very special times for everyone. You and your child may want to share this speical occasion at school. While we want your child's birthday to be a meaningful day, we are also mindful of those who have allergies and/or on a special diet. We also want to encourage healthy eating habits. Instead of sending a sugary treat, how about letting your child "treat" his/her friends to a birthday gift for the classroom.
The Birthday child may bring a book or an educational game (wrapped in birthday paper if you would like to) that he/she will give to the class. This gift will become a permanent part of the classroom. You could create a name plate or photo on the inside of the book or game to make the occasion even more memorable. You do not have to do this, but this might be a wonderful way to celebrate the day.
Field Trip Guidelines:
Field trips are learning experiences that extend and enhance classroom learning. The following guidelines must be met in order for each child to attend an off-campus learning experience.
1. Payment must be submitted to the classroom teacher by 8:00 a.m. each collection day.
- There are 3 collection days for each field trip collection.
- Deadlines will be extended only if your child was absent on a collection day.
- Payments are accepted by classroom teachers only, not at the school office.
2. Lunch can be purchased through the school cafeteria. If you choose to bring lunch it must be in a labeled disposable bag on the day of the field trip.
3. Each child must wear covered shoes on the day of the field trip. It is also recommended that each child wear his/her school shirt or school colors.
4. Appropriate in-school behavior is required to participate in off-campus learning experiences.
5. Parents interested in volunteering to chaperone a field trip must indicated their interest by marking the space provided on the field trip permission form and wait to be notified by the classroom teacher. Please also do not send payment until notified.
